Enhanced light transmission through a single subwavelength aperture.

چکیده
The optical transmission through a subwavelength aperture in a metal film is strongly enhanced when the incident light is resonant with surface plasmons at the corrugated metal surface surrounding the aperture. Conversely, the aperture acts as a novel probe of the surface plasmons, yielding useful insights for optimizing the transmission enhancement. For the optimal corrugation geometry, a set of concentric circular grooves, three times more light is transmitted through the central subwavelength aperture than directly impinges upon it. This effect is useful in the fabrication of near-field optical devices with extremely high optical throughput.

Split-ring-resonator-coupled enhanced transmission through a single subwavelength aperture.
We report the enhanced transmission of electromagnetic waves through a single subwavelength aperture by using a split-ring resonator (SRR) at microwave frequencies. By placing a single SRR at the near field of the aperture, strongly localized electromagnetic fields are effectively coupled to the aperture with a radius that is 20 times smaller than the resonance wavelength (r/lambda=0.05). We ob...
متن کاملObservation of enhanced transmission for s-polarized light through a subwavelength slit.
Enhanced optical transmission (EOT) through a single aperture is usually achieved by exciting surface plasmon polaritons with periodic grooves. Surface plasmon polaritons are only excited by p-polarized incident light, i.e. with the electric field perpendicular to the direction of the grooves. The present study experimentally investigates EOT for s-polarized light. A subwavelength slit surround...
متن کاملBeaming light from a subwavelength aperture.
Light usually diffracts in all directions when it emerges from a subwavelength aperture, which puts a lower limit on the size of features that can be used in photonics. This limitation can be overcome by creating a periodic texture on the exit side of a single aperture in a metal film. The transmitted light emerges from the aperture as a beam with a small angular divergence (approximately +/-3 ...
متن کاملWaveguide properties of single subwavelength holes demonstrated with radially and azimuthally polarized light
We investigate the transmission of focused beams through single subwavelength holes in a silver film. We use radially and azimuthally polarized light, respectively, to excite higher order waveguide modes as well as to match the radial symmetry of the aperture geometry. Remarkably, the transmission properties can be described by a classical waveguide model even for thicknesses of the silver film...
متن کاملField enhancement in metallic subwavelength aperture arrays probed by erbium upconversion luminescence.
Upconversion luminescence from erbium ions placed in the near field of subwavelength aperture arrays is used to investigate field enhancement of incident near-infrared light in such nanostructures. We study field enhancement due to the excitation of both propagating and localized surface plasmon resonances in arrays of square and annular apertures in a Au film. The conversion of 1480 nm excitat...
